We want your acute care to be as simple and quick as possible for you.

Here are some frequently asked questions about acute care in the direct primary care setting.

General Understanding of Acute Care

Acute care refers to the treatment of short-term or recently onset conditions with severe symptoms. This type of care is distinct from standard primary care, which typically involves managing chronic conditions and providing wellness/preventative care. Acute care at TBH Medical is an indispensable part of your primary care. When you have an acute illness or injury, you’ll benefit from our direct primary care approach, which enables you to receive same-day treatment from your nurse practitioner without the wait times you might experience at other clinics.

Our acute care services at TBH Medical cover a broad range of acute, non-emergent conditions, such as:

  • Upper respiratory infections and colds
  • Strep throat
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Sinusitis
  • Mild gastrointestinal issues

By providing acute care in our office, we can deliver the timely, effective care you need for acute conditions. Plus, because your nurse practitioner has firsthand knowledge of your overall medical history, you’ll receive highly personalized care.

Acute care is a natural part of direct primary care at TBH Medical. With smaller patient panels, our nurse practitioner has the time and space to promptly evaluate and treat acute conditions. This streamlined care enables you to avoid the obstacles that often arise in a traditional practice, receive the treatment you need before your symptoms worsen, and get back to living your life.

Services Offered

Our nurse practitioner will evaluate your symptoms, diagnose your condition, and develop a treatment plan to help you feel better. Whether you’re experiencing an ear infection, a sudden rash, or flu symptoms, we’ll use the latest evidence-based approaches to help you recover as quickly as possible.

Many point-of-care diagnostics, such as rapid strep tests, urinalysis, and basic lab tests, can be conducted on-site at our Colorado Springs location. If you require X-rays or labs that aren’t available in our office, we’ll use our connections with local labs and imaging centers to arrange the testing you need at a fair, transparent price.

Yes. We can evaluate and treat many types of minor injuries in the office. Our nurse practitioner commonly treats simple sprains, uncomplicated lacerations (which may require sutures), and first-degree burns. This enables you to avoid the expense and long wait times of an urgent care center or emergency department.

Access and Availability

Because acute conditions are unexpected, we have committed to making same-day or next-day appointments available with our nurse practitioner when needed. This is one of the real advantages of our direct primary care model.

Yes, we offer same-day appointments for acute conditions. However, we are not a walk-in clinic. We prefer that you schedule an appointment so that our nurse practitioner can adequately prepare for your visit and you can avoid waiting in the lobby.

Our acute care hours are the same as our regular office hours at TBH Medical. However, as a direct primary care member, you can contact our nurse practitioner outside of business hours.

Costs and Membership

Yes, most acute care visits are included in your monthly fee. We do not believe you should incur a copay or other fee to be seen when you are acutely ill. This way, you don’t have to hesitate to come in when you are sick for fear of unexpected charges.

Although your visit and time with the provider are covered by your monthly fee, there may be nominal, at-cost fees for certain medical supplies, lab tests, or medications we dispense in the office. We will always discuss these fees with you before they are incurred so that you have the opportunity to decide whether you wish to incur the additional expense.

Using TBH Medical for acute care (not emergency care) is much less expensive than going to urgent care or the ER.

Our members enjoy substantial cost savings on acute care by avoiding facility fees and billing markups. You will also receive exceptional care from a knowledgeable healthcare provider who is already very familiar with your health history.

Care Coordination

If your acute condition is outside the scope of care we provide in our primary care office, your nurse practitioner will expedite your transfer to the appropriate specialist or emergency room. We will act as your healthcare agent to ensure that the consulting doctors have access to your pertinent medical records, and we will follow your care and be updated on your status.

Yes, we have excellent professional relationships with many specialists and hospital groups in the Colorado Springs region. If you need a specialist or hospital care, we at TBH Medical will facilitate your referral, monitor your care, and incorporate the specialist’s input back into your primary care plan.

If your acute condition calls for medication, your nurse practitioner will immediately send an electronic prescription to the Colorado Springs pharmacy of your choice. Often, TBH Medical has many common acute care medications in our office that we can provide to you at our wholesale cost so you will not need to make a trip to the pharmacy.

Patient Care

If you develop an acute condition, you will call our office or use our secure patient portal to report your symptoms. We will schedule you for an appointment in our office or a virtual visit, depending on your symptoms. Your nurse practitioner will:

  • evaluate you
  • explain your diagnosis and treatment options
  • implement the right treatment plan for you

As a member of TBH Medical, you can receive acute care tailored to your individual needs. Your nurse practitioner will consider your chronic medical conditions, your medications, and your health goals when treating your acute condition. The result will be better and safer care.

Why Choose TBH Medical for Acute Care?

The biggest reason is that you can come straight to a provider you know and trust. There’s no need to wait for an insurance company to approve anything or spend your day in a crowded urgent care waiting room. Urgent care facilities tend to whisk you through a disjointed system with a provider you’ve never met before.

Having an established relationship with an NP improves outcomes in acute care situations. Since we have a relationship with you and already know your baseline health, it’s easier to determine whether your current symptoms are abnormal for you. This means we can diagnose you more quickly and avoid prescribing anything that may interfere with our management of your chronic condition.

Membership and Enrollment

Yes, to receive acute care services from TBH Medical, you must be a member of our DPC practice. This is because our goal is to keep our panels small enough to guarantee same-day appointments and enough time to visit with our NP whenever you need it.

There are no age or pre-existing condition restrictions for membership at TBH Medical. Everyone is welcome in our practice, and we will work with you to create an individualized primary and acute care plan that meets your needs.

Becoming a member at TBH Medical is a simple process that we’ve designed to get you up and running as quickly as possible. Simply call our office to schedule a short meet-and-greet with our NP to ensure our practice is a good fit for you.
